"We went to school just long enough to muster and was let out on liberty, at 8:00 to 12:00 midnight tomorrow night.
I stenciled cloths all morning and packed my sea bag.
After chow Bragg and I took a shower, and dressed up and went out about 2:00. It was raining buckets.
We played pool and ping pong and I wrote a letter to Mom and Sweet.
We went and got supper, and then walked around in the rain like a couple of dopes, trying to decide what to do. We thought about coming back to the base to the show, but the bus never came, so we went back to the Y. We had to wait a heck of a long time to get the bus back, finally it came.
Got in bed at 1:00. Still miss Mom and Sweet, in New London."

"It sure was a beautiful day. Spring is here and summer is not far off. It's so clear out, you can see across the river, which is like a sea of glass, to New London, where everything looks quiet and peaceful.
This morning we had our weekly test and I did lousy. I'm sure disgusted with myself. I just did not stay on the ball this week, that's all. That just goes to show you, darn it. I'm learning the hard way I guess.
This afternoon we had a lecture on drafts and such. In the theater had movies on Pearl Harbor. They were the normal photograph. That was a stab in the back for the U.S. and especially for these men that were there. They didn't have half a chance.
Went to the show after chow and saw, "Ladies Courageous, " about the W.A.F.S.
Got two letters from Sweet. I wrote to her, washed and hit the sack."
Later my dad reacted strongly to the movie "Pearl Harbor. I took him and my mom to see it when it was first made. He also saw it on TV in his room at the assisted care home. He told me both times how the movie upset him.

"Flippen left today. He sailed from here, U.S.S. Parc.
I washed clothes right after school, and got it over with.
I went to chow and then Gaudette, Brown, and Hall and I went swimming. We stayed in just long enough to get pepped up.
Wrote part of a letter to mom, and then wrote to Sweet. Talked to Bragg for awhile and then he and I went to mail the letters. Then we stopped in Ship's Service and got a coke.
Read a bit and then hit the sack.

"I got a money order this afternoon for $51.00. It looks like I'm going to night lookout school before Electric Torpedo. If I go at all. So I will be here for next payday.
We have duty tonight. No air raid as yet.
I got two letters from Betty today, was sweet as usual.
After school took a shower and shaved. Then went to chow. After chow I wrote to Mom and then to Sweet. Went down to the canteen and got a coke. Read awhile and then hit the sack."

"I got a hair cut this morning and this afternoon we had exercises.
I got two letters from Sweet and one from Mom.
After the show, Gaudette and I went to the show and saw Martha Ray and Kay Farmers, and Lana
Turner and misty Mayfield in, "Four Jills in a Jeep." It was good.
I wrote to Sweet and then washed clothes.
In her letter she told all about what she was going to make me for dinner. Swiss steak. I love you Sweets.

Happy Easter
"Kirkwood came in drunk last night again and we had a heck of a time getting him to bed. He will never be a man, although he thinks he is one now.
Mustered at 7:40 this morning. Wash my knit hat gloves, sweater and scarf. I won't need them too soon again. I hope. Cleaned up my locker. White hats came in today.
After chow, Gaudette and I played basketball. Then I took a shower and shaved, and mustered at 3:45. After chow I wrote to Mom and then to Sweet. I hope I can get home someday again. I will but it looks like a long time. Time has passed pretty fast so far. I hope it keeps it up."

"We started electric fish today.
I got a letter from Mom and two from Betty, and also a box of candy, from Mom, with an Easter card in it.
We had to work after school today waxing decks, since we had duty this weekend. We got finished at 6:30. I washed a mess of clothes and took a shower. By the time I got to writing Sweet, it was 9:00, so I didn't send it. I'll write on it tomorrow.
Hit the sack and the moon was out again. It was awful foggy out tonight.

"We had our week's test today, 100%.
Had locker inspection this afternoon. The chief saw Betty's picture and just stood there and looked. Then he just said, "She is really a pretty girl. Son, you are a very lucky man." Marked down 4.0 without even inspecting it. The rest of the guys was standing around and of course they had to see too. They all said that she was sweet and beautiful. I was so darned proud. She is swell and the prettiest girl I've ever seen. I love you Sweetheart.
Gaudette and I went to the early show and saw, "Meet the People," with Dick Powel, Lucille Ball, frozen Puss, and Van Monroe and his orchestra. It was swell. I got a letter from Betty today and an Easter card, it was sweet, and here I couldn't even send her one. I wrote to sweet and then hit the sack.
With all my love.

I wrote to Mom and then to Betty after supper, and then I washed some clothes. I went to bed pretty early and started reading Richard Haliberton's "Royal Road to Romance."

"I got Betty's pictures today. It's really something. It looks as if she could talk. Just what I wanted, and it was sweet of her to have it taken for me.
Went to canteen and got Phyllis and Dad a birthday card. They don't have any Easter cards, so it looks like I can not send one to Mom and Betty. Darn it. And Kinsey said he could not find any in town.
I wrote to Mom and Betty and went to bed at 8:30. Got a letter from Betty today. The picture is swell and everybody thinks that she is pretty. I'm proud of you and your picture Sweet."

"That sleep is what I needed. I guess anyway. I feel like a million this morning, and it is a nice morning out. The robins woke me up. The war sure has not changed them a bit. I thought I was home for a minute. They used to sing out in Grandma's tree, and wake me up, sure as the day would come.
I feel O.K. today thank goodness. In school we signed up for duty request and I took Electric Torpedo School. I can't make my mind sorry or sad. I am doing what is best and not what I want.
We had exercises today and more running.
I got a letter from Mom and Sweet today.
Gaudette and I went to chow and then to the show and saw, "Lady Let's Dance," with Beleta.
Wrote to Sweet, washed and hit the sack. Got paid $40 today."
I moved from Indianapolis to New York in the 70's. Indianapolis is on the western edge of the EST zone, The east coast is on the eastern edge. Indianapolis never observed daylight savings time. It was not needed. On the east coast the sun time was an hour earlier and I remember daylight with the birds sing was as early as 4:30 a.m. in the spring before daylight savings time.

"We started in on submerged tubes today. I don't know what was wrong with me but I was so nervous and shaky. I almost thought I was nuts for awhile. Everything seemed to go wrong. I never have felt this way before. Just an off day I guess.
We had duty today and still not air raid. I got a letter from Mom and 2 and 1/4 from Sweet. One was an April fools joke, with a black sheet of paper. The sweet little devil. I wrote to Mom and Sweet and hit the sack early. I couldn't get to sleep before lights out, too much noise."
Submerged tubes sounds serious to me. I wonder it Dad was in the classroom or on a submarine.

I weighed myself after chow and I am up to 156.
It started out to be a nice day, but it rained most of it.
I wrote to Sweet almost all afternoon. Stan and I went to the early show and saw, "The Return of the Vampire," and "Hello Good Looking." It was O.K.
I finished writing to Sweet and hit the sack. I almost did a foolish thing today, but I am learning I guess."
Well that is a mystery. What did dad almost do?

We had tests this afternoon, then a locker inspection, for our dress shoes and blues.
Went to the show and saw, "The Imposter." It was about the free French. They are some guys. At least I still have what I am fighting for.
Wrote to Mom and Sweet, and hit the sack early for once."

Memo
Easter card from Sweet, April 9, 1944
Easter greetings between the two of us.
"There is no one I can talk to, quite the way I talk to you. There is no one whom I would rather take my plans and troubles too. No one is so fine and understanding in every way. No one to whom I am sending more warm wishes to on Easter Day.
With all my love, forever,
Betty"

"It is not only the few glittering hours--
glittering deadly hours of action which rivet all eyes--
the strain falls on the navy.
Far more does is fall on the weeks and months of ceaseless trial and vigilance"
Winston Churchill.

"The chief gave us a talk all day about his patrols.
After supper, Gaudette and I went swimming in the pool for 20 minutes. I sure have not done much swimming lately.
We went to see Captain Glenn Miller at 5:30 in the gym. He broadcasted at the theater first. He sure was good and plenty solid. He played until 9:30, then the sub base band played for the dance. Gaudette wanted to stay, so I finally dragged him away at 12:00. It just made me miss Sweet all the more. That's the last time I go to anything like that until I can get home. I miss you Sweetheart."

"Today we had duty again, still gun crew. No watches to stand. Lucky. I didn't get a letter from Sweet today. That will just make two tomorrow. I got one from Mom and Clalipski in P.T. School..
Gaudette and I went aboard the U.S.S. Greer, a can that just pulled in for supplies. She is old, commissioned in 1918. That is the first surface craft that I had ever been on. She is old but is still trim and fast, and well armed. We crawled up to the crow's nest. Man is that high. I bet that would be some ride in rough weather. The crew were swell guys. Sea life is a lonely and dreary job. You could tell it from these guys too. It's some ship.
Wrote to Mom and Sweet. Washes skivvies and hit the sack.
Goodnight Sweets."
My Dad had equilibrium problems. He used to wash his bedroom windows above the garage. It made him dizzy to be on the ladder.

Went to the show again, much against my will. Gaudette drug me to it. It was, "Hour before Dawn," and not worth a darn. I should have stayed here and wrote to Mom. I wrote to Sweet, after the show. We had 50 cal. practice again today. I went to sleep and dreamed right in the middle of it.
Went to the show this evening and saw, "Coner Girl," with Reta Hayworth.
It is really raining out tonight. I got Betty's letter that I wrote pretty wet.
Well today is Betty's 18th Birthday. She is of age now. She is so Sweet."
Back then girls could get married without parental permission at 18. Men had to be 21. I Know a letter was needed for Dad to marry her after the war. If I am doing my math right, Dad was only 18, to turn 19 in August. They were so young to have the war on their shoulders.

I got two letters from Sweet today. I wrote to Betty, and started a letter to Dad. I just hope that Mom does not read the letter. And I hope he will understand all the stuff I said."

"The snow is really deep this morning.
We had 50 cal. machine gun practice This morning. It was really something. The hardest part is finding the target with the tracers. We were firing at aircraft. They sure move fast. It's going to be hard being a good gunner. We got paid today and I went to the post office and got a $40.00 money order.
After chow Gaudelte and I wrote letters. I got a letter from Mom and Sweet and answered them. I mailed them. Washed clothes till 10:45. Hit the sack."

"It sure was snowing this morning.
We started advance school today. We are on guns this week. 45 cal. pistol, 50 cal. and 20 M.M. aircraft guns. Thompson submarine gun, Garand rifle, Springfield and carbine rifles. It looks like I am going to be a gunner. I ain't kicking and I ain't happy about it. A 20 M.M. on a sub surface battle station is pretty rough. That just makes one more count against me. But the better the gunner the better his chance. So a good gunner I'll be. We changed barracks again. I'm in 147 now.
Stone and I went to the show and saw, "See here Private Hargrove." It was good. Came back and answered a letter from Sweet."
Dad's Submarine sank several enemy ships. He was a torpedo man with his bunk over a torpedo. In one of his last years he told me that he had killed only on man face to face. A sub had come up next to them. A sailor came out facing him with his gun pointed. Dad said he had cut the sailor in two with fire. The memory bothered him, and he had remembered this when much of his memory had slipped away. This was the only time he talked about the incident.
My Dad was seasick when on the surface, so he tried to pull duty above board as often as possible. He had no problems when they were submerged.

"I had to get up at 6:00 as usual, but went back to bed at 8:00 and slept till noon. Then got up and went to chow. After chow I wrote a letter to Mom and started one to Sweet. Washed a mess of clothes and then went to chow and a show with Jay. The show was "Spider Women," with Sherlock Holms. After the show I finished the letter to Sweet and hit the sack.
I saw a shooting star last night coming back from liberty. It was real plain and streaked about 90 degrees."

"We went to school all day and saw a movie on battle wound dressing. Just before we left, Chief gave back to me my liberty pass. I was sure surprised.
After chow I got cleaned up and Mendanca and I went to New London. We got a ride in an Army jeep. Some ride. We messed around and then looked around town. I got Betty a birthday card. Then we played pool at the Y until supper. Then I wrote to Sweet and played some more pool. Went to the show and then came out and played pool until 3:00 in the morning.
It seems strange in New London without Sweet. Everything I see reminds me of something we did, or said. It sort of makes me feel sort of funny inside. I miss her so much and I love her with all my heart. I got the letter she wrote me on the train from New York to Indianapolis. I also got a letter from Dad. He wrote me a whole letter. He is some guy."

"Today is St. Patrick's Day.
We had our final tests today and boy were they tough. We had a strength test after school today.
After chow I wrote part of a letter to Sweet. I'll mail it tomorrow. No letter today except form Aunt Ruth and Marjorie.
At 8:30 Gaudett and I went the show. Lord what a mob, to get in. We were lucky and made it. The picture was, "Up in Arms." It was a musical comedy and really good, in technicolor with Diana Shore."

"We had inspection today. The officer took my liberty and gave me heck for moving at attention. I hadn't moved but no use arguing. No Graduation liberty I guess. Just so I don't have to stay in the blue room I won't mind.
I washed clothes before chow and wrote to Mom and Sweet, then went to bed. We had duty this evening but no duty for me. I'm lucky.
Got the letter that Betty wrote on the train between here and New York, then sent it from there."

"We went out on the Pike again today. I had the Bow Planes, everything 4.0. The skipper made a beautiful dock this evening. I'm getting to feel more at home aboard now.
We had exercises after school hours this evening. Not so hot. I don't like the idea.
After the show I washed my jumper and cleaned out my locker.
Well they left today at 10:00. At least they said they were going too. I hope they get on their train O.K. I stopped at 10:00 and daydreamed a bit. It sort of seemed like my life was leaving. It was at that. I will see Sweet someday though.
I'm tired so I am going to hit the sack at 8:30.
I got the letter Betty wrote at the hotel. I'm not going to write tonight. She will understand. I'm going to catch up on my sleep. I love you sweetheart with all my heart."

"We had night vision all afternoon, and just about slept all morning in class. Got into town about 5:00. Went to get a card and a box of candy and a corsage. When I got to the hotel they were waiting. Betty and I went out to a park and took a whole lot of pictures. I hope they turn out O.K.
Went back and Sweet opened her birthday presents. She seemed pleased and I am sure glad. The corsage looked pretty on her. We ate at the hotel, and then went up and got our coats and went to the show, "Girl from Alaska" and "At Dawn We Die." After the show we played cards again and Mom sewed up my coat lining. Mom fix me up a sack of apples and candy. I told Mother, "Goodbye." It was sure hard on her, me too, I'm afraid. Betty and I went out and walked some more, all over. We talked about us and everything. We came in at 1:00. I told her goodbye in the hall. It was harder this time than it ever was. We said a lot in those few minutes. I'll see her again someday. I love her with all my heart and she me. Got in bed at 2:30."
My mother's birthday is March 23. I can't even imagine how low my dad must have felt as he went back to the base.

Monday
Boy was I sleepy today in class. I sure did not do any work today. Just passed the day. When we went to town the buses weren't running so I walked.
We played cards all evening and ate candy and nuts. Boy we ate.
Sweet and I went out for a walk about 10:30. Came back to the hotel and get Betty a head scarf. The wind was really blowing. We walked then until 12:00. We sure had fun. She is sure sweet. We walked over to the old mill. The water was boiling under the bridge. The moon was out. I kissed Sweet on the bridge. She is so sweet. I could have kissed her all night. Her face was so cold and sweet. I love you sweet with all my heart. We talked in the lobby until 1:00, then went up and I kissed her again goodnight. I love you sweet. Got a taxi back. Got in bed at 2:15."
Dad had wanted this diary after my mother had died. He said he wanted to throw it away, because it was too racy. I told him that I was G rated. His Alzheimer's was progressing. I left it with him, knowing he would forget about it. I kept an eye on it in his room and then removed it later when he was not longer focused on it. I had asked the staff to keep an eye on his trash. Fortunately his diary survived.

"Got up at 11:00 and took a shower. Then we had to go to the drug store and get some shaving gear. Came back to the Y and finished cleaning up. Got to them at 12:00. We ate right there in the hotel. Had a nice dinner, salmon. We played cards until afternoon. At 4:30 we started out for the base. We took a taxi and checked Sweet's camera at the main gate. We walked around a bit and then went to the show and saw, "Lady in the Dark," with Ginger Rogers. It was swell.
We went back to town and went to a hamburger joint and ate. Then we went up and played cards again. When I left I did not know whether to kiss Sweet or not, so I just started to leave. She caught me and kissed me. You could have knocked me down, she's wonderful.
Got to bed at 2:00."
One of my Mom's favorite meals is a hamburger. It has to have pickles. Leaving one restaurant, and go to another over the pickles.

"Mandanca and I road into town with Brady. We went straight to our room at the Y.M.C.A and got cleaned up. It is a pretty nice room. We then went to the hotel and got Mom and Sweet, and then set out to find a supper. We ended up at the Cracker House. What a lousy meal. I had to take a drunk out that was bothering Betty. She's sweet.
We then went to the show and saw, "Passage to Marcell" with Humphry Bogart. After the show we went up to the hotel room. Then Betty and I started out for a dance at the Y. It was just over. Elmer went into bed. We walked all over New London, just like old times again. Betty sure is sweet. We sat and talked in the lobby and then she went up. I told her I loved her for the first time in a long time. I kissed her again. Ohhh!! I love you my sweet with all my heart. Went to the Y and played pool until 4:00 with Elmer, then went to bed."
My grandmother and Mom finally went to New London to see Dad. I bet that was a big deal. It was interesting that Dad met them with friends in tow, but it seem like Mom and Dad did finally have some time alone.
Sounds like my dad put his skills to work that he learned being guard at the jail when they were at diner. Our family can be great night owls and dad was not eager to get to bed after leaving his sweetheart for the night.

"Mandanca and I went to New London.
We first saw Mother and Betty walking down the street carrying their suitcases. It was sure wonderful to see them again. Betty sure looks sweet.
He and I went to the Y.M.C.A. and played pool while they got settled.
We all went to supper and then went back and talked.
We came back to the base early, because they were tired. They sure have a nice room.
We ate before coming back. Met Jay and took a taxi.
I kissed Sweet goodnight. It was the first time in a long time. I'm still dizzy. She sure is wonderful. I love her so dang much. I won't forget that kiss.

"No Letters again today. I Didn't write any to Sweet tonight. It sure seems strange. I washed a lot of clothes tonight.
We saw a movie today. I called Mom at 7:30 P.M., to tell her where to go when she got here. I talked to Dad most of the time. He is a wonderful guy, if only I could be as good as he is I will be satisfied.
Four of us got into a playful little fight tonight, and they were all against me. Boy we sure acted crazy. My total: 1 skinned heal, 1 skinned ankle, 1 sprained thumb and ankle, 1 sore nose and neck, and stiff neck. It was all in fun and we all took it that way. It was fun."
Dad must have been a little goofy after his fight. His spelling was unusually bad. I corrected things so it could be read.

"We went out on the U.S.S. Pike all day today.
I had mess cook with Kinsey. He is a good guy. We peeled enough spuds for an army. Chow was swell. Afternoon I had forward and after torpedo rooms. This was the first 1500 ton I have been out on. It's swell. I got acquainted with the 50 cal. machine gun today, an other one of my hurtles. Oh I am going to have quite a time. One of our subs has real fire power and real fighting men. I saw my first cans today-a D.C. deck tubes and ash cans and all.
I got two letters from Sweet today. She is sure some wonderful girl. If I can't have her, she will sure make some guy a wonderful wife. But I'm trying my best. It's up to God now.
Went to the show and saw, "Nine Girls."
Goodnight Sweet."

Wrote to Sweet all day.
Went to early show with Beutener. The picture was, "Suspected Person." It was an English picture."

"We had weeks tests again today, and I went to small stores.
After school I took all of two hours to clean up and shave. I got some talcum powder. Boy it stinks so pretty.
I didn't write Betty tonight. I didn't have much to say. I hope she will understand.
Went to the show by myself and saw, "Chip off the old block." It was about young kids. I thought it was swell.
A short was, "Marines on Tarawa." It showed dead Marines in the water along the beach, bloated and floating. It hit me like a truck. God what a sight that was."
When Dad saw, "Pearl Harbor," in the movies and at his home, several scenes really disturbed him.

I have been looking forward to them more than I realized, I guess. I answered her letters and the one I got from Sweet. I mustered at 8:30, then washed some clothes and cleaned up to hit the sack. Betty sure is consistent in her writing. She is sweet to spend so much time on me. I hope she is happy. I don't imagine it is very exciting waiting for a guy. I sure hope I can get home to her someday. I love her with all my heart. I don't know what I would do without her."

"Got a hair cut today and barber just about scalped me.
Stone, Mendonca, and I went out on liberty to New London. It was my first time out since I have been here, 8 weeks. I felt just as much out of place as when I first came into the Navy. I felt too free to be comfortable.
Went to the jewelry store and got and expansion watch strap for Sweet. Went to the R.R. station and got two tickets to N.Y.C. for a guy. Went to eat at a nice restaurant. Stoner went to a show and we went to the U.S.O. at the Y.M.C.A. No women. It felt more like usual with just men around. They had a lot of swell records. Wrote to Sweet and answered her two letters today. We played pad and ping pong till late. Met a guy from home. Got something to eat and took a taxi back to base. Hit the sack at 12:15."
Here are a few of the notes left from the Memo pages.
"Betty Cuppy, I love you more as the time passes and I'm sure it will keep on being that way."
"God of the hidden purpose, let our embarking be, the prayer of proud men asking not to be safe, but free."

" Studied all day.
Got a short letter from Sweets.
Went to the show with Jay and saw, "Casanova of Burlesque," with Joey Brown."
My Father does not seem to write much on days that he is focused on studying. I find it very enriching to type his words each day. It gives me pause to think about how he was developing as a man, and how this period of time affects him. His journal while he was at sea was more of an inventory of battle encounters with less self introspection.
My Father was an extraordinary man in my eyes. He did not drink or smoke. He speaks of his faith in God being a foundation. His faith was different than mine. I suspect he went to church more than I did as a child. I did not know that he studied that Bible much. His faith in Jesus Christ and God was unquestioned. God definitely guided Dads days.
I also never knew a more honest honorable man. He was obviously a leader and one that could be depended on. He was obviously an introvert. You can tell by his pattern of days. It was important to do his job as a sailor and do it well. He took his duties and studies seriously. I suspect that he pulled guard duty at the brig because he would never end up there any other way. He had a couple of good friends. Went to the movies often, and spent much of his time writing letters. His home and his love for my mother meant the world to him. I see him willing to do his duty during this war, with his dreams for the future being put on hold. His faith in God's protection seemed to give him the hope that there be another time for him to see his dreams fulfilled. This is balance with the knowledge he would never return home. Entering the was beyond mid way, he was very aware of the risks.

"Studied all day. Plenty to learn. If I can just remember it all.
Had duty, brig guard. Got two letters from sweet and answered them this evening. Mustered at 8:30, then washed clothes and cleaned up and hit the sack."
So I just get caught up and here is leap year. There are three pages of notes and memos. Some of the these pages are filled in by other family members after he went to sea and left the diary with my mother. Following will be the notes that
dad made:
"The man that is free has his liberty, so I must stand up and fight, that someday I will have this wonderful God given right."
"The soldier on land, and the sailors at sea, all left our loved ones so dear, to fight for this right, against the foes of might, that these loved ones may live without fear."
"I left my wonderful home, and the one I love more that life, I know that someday, if I be God's will, I will return from this assignment to kill, to a life in a beautiful world again, where I will live and love at my will."
Among the flowers and trees and sky so blue, with the love of my wife and God so true, I am a home of my own, with a will of my own, determining what I will do. The price can never be too great that we must pay, to live in a free happy world someday."

"Went back to sleep after a guard woke me up to report to the brig. I woke up in time but I've got luck always.
Worked out in the gym after school.
Got a letter from Mom and Sweet.
After chow I wrote some to Sweet.
Jay and I went to the show again and saw, "The Sullivans." It was about those 5 brothers killed in sea action. It was swell. Guys like that should really be honored. They did their best.
This life seems to do something to me anymore. I seem to be waking up to the fact that I am lucky to be in the U.S.N., and an American and I'm proud of it. I can accept it all now and not flinch if God is with me. I'm more content now, and it is better this way.
I saw Ted Styre today. He sure is thin and weak. He must have had some time of it."

"Got up at 5:30 and went to take the prisoners to breakfast. Mailed Sweet's letter on the way. Ate chow myself and came back to the barracks and changed clothes. Mustered at school at 7:40 and cleaned up the place for two hours. Came back and took a shower and cleaned up. Took prisoners to chow again at 10:45 again. Then ate myself and had a swell chow.
Came back and wrote to Betty until 2:30.
Went over to the gym at 2:30 and worked out. Went to muster again at 3:45 and went to the brig again. Met Jay and Stone at 5:30 and we went to the show and saw, "Tender Comrade," with Gwen Rogers. It was good but plenty sad.
Wrote to Sweet afterwards and hit the good old sack."

"We had our tests again today. I did O.K. again
I got a letter from Sweet and Betty Watson again. Boy that gal was mad I guess. But darn it, I wrote her a nice letter. But nuts to her. She must think that she is somebody. Betty sure is different than anyone else I've known. She is polite kind and sweet. What else could a guy ask for in a girl.
I had prison guard for supper tonight, then Jay and Stone and I went to the show, and saw, "The United." It was good. Then I mustered and came back and wrote Sweet and washed my dungarees and hit the sack."

"Took another night vision test. Passed 4.00
Had inspection and everything was O.K. except, I have to get the rate on my white jumpers.
Wrote all evening to Mom and Sweet. Listened to the radio in the lower deck room.
Got package from Mom with sardines, olives and raisons. It sure was good. Mom is swell."
I think my dad's care package was interesting. I shows how little things mean a lot. My father introduced me to sardines when I was a kid. I am surprised I ate them because I was a picky eater. I guess my adventure in food was developed early even though I was know not to eat many things.

Wednesday
"We went out on the "O8" today. The motor launch took us out at noon. We ate chow and it was sure good. It was awfully rough out there today. Sea life is a stiff job. I hope I am man enough to do a good job of it. It felt wonderful with the spray in my face, the wind and all. The sea is big and deep and cruel, but man if he is strong enough and God is with him, is bigger.
My duty was to place the Jack in the Jack staff when we docked. I walked out onto the bow and clung to the staff. A wave just about covered me. I was lucky and held on. The most important, I fulfilled my order. The biggest waves I have ever seen.
I got a letter from Mom and sweet. Wrote to both. Went to the show and saw "Jane Eyre." It was wonderful. God created such a beautiful world and put people in it to live happily. Why must they kill?"
The sea seems to inspire my dad. The last thought he wrote today put the world in perspective with God...then man's failings.

"Well I guess to day is Washington's birthday.
I got two letters from Sweet and one from Mother.
I saw, "The Bridge San Lain Rey," tonight with Jay. No one liked it but me. I just did something to me. I'm so darned different sometimes. I wonder. Jay sure was different tonight. His uncle getting killed seemed to wake him up. We seem to think alike tonight. We talked about the war and it's connection, if God will have it, we will be home again someday. If not, I have no luck. There are bound to be some lucky guys to get home again, and if I don't that will just make it possible for one of them.
I hope no one will ever read this. I'm afraid they would not understand. I sure do a lot of thinking. God sure created a wonderful world and I am glad to have a chance to keep it that way. I love you Sweet."
My father did not drink. So many went out often and drank to deaden their fears. My father seems to deal with the conflict that he has big dreams for his future, but he still wants to do his part for his country."
It sickens me that so many have chosen to use President's Day to protest and denounce our president. Their actions seem to be very disrespectful of the very things my dad fought to preserve. This denying that Donald Trump is not their president seems to disconnect from the big picture. What do they think they will accomplish? Would any of these people serve this country as my dad did?
I have to be careful not to judge the protesters as they seem to blindly judge everyone else. I do not agree with their present actions, but this disconnect from our present government does not totally define each individual. Many of them care about the same things I do. We just disagree on how to handle the outcome of this past election.

"I took a night vision test this morning. I passed O.K.
Got a letter from both Mom and Sweet. Wrote to them both this evening. I had prison guard again today. That sure is a good duty.
Jay got word that his uncle was killed in Italy. It sure is a fast small world and things are happening everyday. It just takes one piece of lead. I guess he got his. He was a swell guy by his letters.
If I ever got mine, I want to be able to take it and not flinch. If God will just give me the strength and courage. I've got both now, but I'll need more before I'm through, I'm thinking."
The news his friend got, was a point close to home. Dad thinks about and faces the fact he may die in this war. I know this is probably an ongoing reflection as he proceeds towards his involvement in the war. I once asked him how he dealt with the possibility of maybe never returning home. He said that he always hoped for the best and everything worked out.
My dad was pretty much a positive person and had an obvious faith in God. I feel that I also have those traits. Both served him well, even in his later years.

"After chow this morning I wrote to Mom and started one to Betty. I then wrote that Betty Witan, thank goodness that's over with. Sweet said she would like to see her picture so she could see her competition. I wish she didn't feel that way about it. She could never have any competition ever. I will always love her.
I went to the show and saw, "Rationing," with Wallace Berg and Marjorie Main. It was sure funny.
I came back and finished Sweet's letter. I think she is wonderful and I love her so much."

"We finished studying "O Boats" today and started on 1500 tons. I made a pretty good mark on my exams. I went to the dentist today. I had irritated gums for a couple weeks. I though it was trench mouth, but it was food pushed up into my upper gums, by my lower front teeth. He just ground them off some. That's twice I have had those teeth ground, but it was necessary, I guess.
Stone and Jay are on liberty, so it looks like I'm to spend the weekend alone. No mail at all today. I sure wish that post office would get on the ball.
I wrote to Mom and Sweet and washed a mess of clothes. I hit the sack on time for once."

"We took 4 dives today. My first time out. I had the wheel watch and the torpedo roam. It felt good to have the whole control of the ship at my fingertips. I saw the ocean for the first time. We eat chow on board and had a good chow. We went out on the O4. I motor launch pick us up, and brought us back in. I sure got wind burn. It was sure a thrill to see the ocean and ships. I have a lot of things I want to write. It was a very interesting experience.
I got two letters from Sweet today. She got the Valentine I sent her. I wrote to her tonight but am going to wait until Sunday to answer those letters. That way I will have something to do. I saw "Alla Baba and Twenty Thieves," tonight. It sure was good.
That was my first dive today and I will never forget it. Being submerged is like floating in space. Subs are tops and I have a long time to be with them, so it's good I like them. We are in the Long Island Sound."
Dad is really excited about seeing the Ocean for the first time. And going out on the sub. It blows my mind that he also had control of the ship. It is hard to believe. I did not know he trained in the Long Island sound when I lived in New York. I do not think he mentioned it when he visited us and went boating in that sound.

"We had the training device this morning and I had both bow and stern plains. The chief really gave me hell till I caught on. In the Navy you are supposed to know things from the start, obey orders and keep your mouth shut. I did all three today. Had prison guard for supper tonight. Had a gand stick, 38 automatic and a riot gun. I could use them if I had too. Orders were to shoot first and ask questions afterwards. Orders are to be obeyed.
Wrote to Mom and sent $5. Got a letter from her but none from Sweet. I miss it too. I wrote to Sweet tonight. I love her more than life."

I got two letters from Sweet.
Stone and Jay went on liberty tonight, so I was by myself tonight. After chow I went to the show and saw "Phantom Lady." I sure miss Betty being in a show with me. I wrote her tonight. I am awful lonesome tonight. I just can't let it get to me, I guess."

"I clicked in school again. I worked out in the gym again today. It sure makes me feel good.
I got a letter from Mom and Sweet and a box of candy from Aunt Verna. Still no candy from Sweet.
I wrote to Sweet and Mom tonight. I didn't write Betty much. I hope she will understand. All I could do is think instead of writing.
I went to night school tonight. They are looking for two permanent Draftsmen, and with all the sloppy stuff they put out, I could run the place, but I am going to play square with myself and stick to subs, and not be a dry land sailor. The only thing I would take it for Betty's sake. But if she knew what I think, she would understand, Mother too.

"Lord what a night. It is raining. I hope Sweet's letter did not get too wet when I mailed it.
I was really on the ball today in school, just like my old self again. I feel a lot better about it all now.
Got up and dressed for chow this morning, and discovered it was only 3:15. I hit the sack again. Talking to Sweet sure affects me.
After school, I went over to the gym and worked out. I'm going to keep it up. It sure makes me feel like me again. I hope I look better when Mom and Betty come to see me.
Went to the show with Stan and saw, "Fighting Sea Bees." Then came back and answered the letter I got from Sweet today. It doesn't look like I am going to get that candy she said she sent. I hate that she spent the time to fix it and it would sure taste good.
Today is Valentine's Day. Ho ho."

"Well my little blue room episode is over. Wrote Mother a 3 page letter answering all her letters. I'll bet she'll faint at 3 pages. Jay and I went to the show and then I went over and called Mom. It was sure good to hear her again and her call cost $2.90. Jay and I went to the afternoon show and then I saw, "Broadway Rhythm," with Fred Murry and Diana Shore. Darn I meant Ginny Simms. It was swell. Then we went to chow again. I went to Jay's barracks and finished writing Sweet's letter, answering all her letters, 6 in all. Then I went over at 8:30 and called her up. It was wonderful to hear her sweet voice again. I love her so much. She is so good and sweet. She couldn't say much and I was a little the same way. She said she loved me and that is what counted anyway. She sounded so close, I did not seem possible. She sure sounded sweet. It's all over with now. It did not last long. Call cost $5.45. It was worth a million to hear her voice.

"I started in school again this morning. My section is now 55 and I had to move again to Bldg. 145 and locker 287. Maybe I can stay put for awhile. I hope it is still snowing out.
I got a letter from Sweets and two from Mom today.
Skipped super tonight so I could get all my gear squared away. After that was done I got cleaned up. I sure needed it too. I sure feel better now. Just hope and can get along alright in school now.
I just remembered that today is Lincoln's birthday today. Well happy birthday old boy.
Worked two hours waxing decks in Gilmore Hall. Finished Sweet's letter and then reported into the blue room.

"Got restricted for two days, for having my pillow face the wrong way, some manly discipline they have here, I thought they would come Sat. and Sun, but into today and Saturday, so I will still have Sunday free.
Had to muster at 4:15 and again at 6:15. Worked at waxing the decks in Sound school for two hours and reported again at 8:45 then at 9:45 had to be in my bunk in the blue room. What a place that hole is.
Shoveled snow all morning. It's been snowing all day. It's about 12 inches thick now. Got a letter from Mom and a get well card from Marjorie and Mrs. St John, a swell Valentine from Betty and 4 of her letters and a letter from Betty. I don't know her. She got my address from Aunt Ida. She sent her picture wanting to write to me. I don't know how to write to another girl. I'm going to Sunday and tell her very politely that I have one girl and she is the only one I ever want."
Dad got a lot of mail today. There was another Betty that wrote him. Sounds like he will send her a reply but only once.

"Worked all day again. Used turpentine all afternoon on the deck, and all the skin is coming off my hands. Got a hair cut this morning too.
Took a shower and shaved after work, and went to the show with Jay and Stone at 6:00. Went over to night school, but didn't stay. I sure dread to start in again, I'm just sick of school I guess. All I need is a good swift kick to straighten me out. Washed a few clothes before hitting the sack. At least I got two letters from Sweet today at least, but one letter is missing. I sure hope I get it tomorrow. Her letters sure mean a lot. They say they are coming to see me when I am in my next school. I wish they would wake up to the fact that there probably won't be any more school. I wrote to Sweet tonight. I love her with all my heart."

"Worked all day again today.
I got a Valentine's Box of candy from Mom, 2 pounds. Man, it's swell, nothing could have been better. No letter today. I'm worried maybe something happened to Sweet. I hope she isn't sick. I miss her letter so much. They mean more me than I ever imagined. I love her with all my heart. Wrote her tonight. Oh, how I love her.
Jay Stone and I went to the show and saw, "Three Russian Girls." Good too.
Thank God for my Sweet, she is everything to me.

"Didn't wake up until lights were on this morning, and found out that I had locked both keys to my padlock in my locker. Boy was I in a mess. After a hard try we got the bottom shelf out by taking out some bolts, and then worked till I could reach up and get my billfold. It was sure some stretch and I scratched my arm all up, but finally made it. While I was putting the bottom on the M.A.A. came along and he sure raised hell. I just missed being put on report by the kindness of his heart.
Got a letter from Sweet today and I sure was glad to get it.
It sure was cold today. Took a shower and shaved this evening. I feel wonderful. Maybe I should do it more often. My frame of mind sure has changed. I'm sort of happy again. Wrote to Mom and Sweet tonight. Jay, Stone and I went to the U.S.O. show at 8:30. Was late getting to bed again. Ha ha."

"Worked in my new detail all day. Not much to do and too much time to do it in. I seemed like mail call would never come. I got a letter from Mom and Uncle John, and a sweet get well card from Betty. She sure thinks of everything. Wrote to Sweet, before and after chow. Jay went to chow with me and after Stone did an enormous washing, we went to the 8:30 show, and saw "Standing Room Only," with Pallett Goddord and Fred McMurry. It sure was good. She reminds me of Betty and just about as pretty as Betty too.
After it was over we walked around quite a bit because it was so pretty out. The moon was beautiful and the stars were real bright. I pray that someday soon that I can be home with Betty again. I miss her so. I'm miserable. It's sure tough to keep going this way. I hope God will help me take it. It's not that I am homesick. I just miss her so. I'm sure going to pray tonight."
Dad is depending on God to help him mentally get through the uncertainty and separation from the girl he loves. He told me often that he prays every night before going to sleep.

"Wrote to Sweet almost all day. And I wrote to Mom.
Laid around all afternoon.
Jay and I when to ship's service and got supper. Then went to 6:30 show and saw a Charlie Chan picture.
Came back and finished that letter to Betty.
Went to sick bay and got my mail. 3 letters from Betty. They are sure sweet, just like the rest.
It sure is a swell night, cold and clean, stars and almost a full moon."

"Doctors discharged me today. Boy I'm week. I lost 15 pounds.
I hate to leave. This is a nice place. No worries and an swell bed. But all good things must end I guess.
I'm in barracks 142 now, bunk 364. I'll be in a detail in Bldg. 127 for two weeks, then I can start back in school where I left off. I'll just be here that much longer. That's all OK by me.
Got my gear squared away and washed my sea bag and clothes. Took a shower and got cleaned up. Stone and Jay are out on liberty. Wrote to Mom and Betty. She says in her letter that if she has to wait 50 years she will, and she is ready to marry me when I say. I love her with all my heart. A little to much for my own good I'm afraid. I just hope we will have our chance to get married."

"Got my mail at last. 2 from mom and 4 from sweet.
Betty told my how her mother and father like me. I guess there is nothing to keep us from getting married except the war. It will be over some day too I hope.
I sure love her. Her letters mean more to me than anyone will know.
I feel a little better and stronger today. Betty found the ring I gave her. She is pretty happy I guess.
"You haven't been late for all our dates. I wouldn't care if you are late for all our dates. Just knowing you would be there is just like heaven."
Oh sweet I love you. I would love to give you that long goaly kiss and a big hug right now. I could take that all night too, I bet you."
Dad seems to be recovering now. He does not make perfect sense, but you get the idea.

"Temp normal and still no scarlet fever, and still no mail damn it.
Felt too rotten to write today. Read all day. "Fighting Caravans" Good Lane Gary Book.
Had my first food today since last Sunday morning, 4 days.
I just hope I get some mail tomorrow.
I've sure been sick for not knowing what it is. I think I know some of the pain and agony a starving man goes through. My stomach has about set me nuts, and I have not eaten for so long. It's worse after you eat. I crave water but it tastes like iodine. I met a guy in the office who went to college in Indianapolis. He wanted me to go to Boston and have a double date the first weekend I'm out. Had a hard time convincing him that my money still goes home and I love Sweet with all my heart."

"Was moved to another isolation room, this noon, with another guy. He has a radio and its a lot nicer, and not quite so lonesome.
They are all just waiting for me to come our with scarlet fever. My lungs still hurt pretty bad. No one seems to want to pay any attention to that. You are just supposed to have what they want you to have, I guess. If I have scarlet fever, I will be in an isolation ward for 21 days. Oh what a mess that will make of my calling up my mom and Sweet for Valentine's Day. I have not received any mail since I have been here. I wish they would hurry up and transfer it.
Temp just about normal. Wrote to mom and Sweet.
Had to take sleeping tablet to sleep."

Still here. Temp went to 103.6 last night. They took it each hour all night long. Just wrote to Sweet today. Couldn't sit up, so couldn't write to both. Had the same temp all day. Jay and Stone came and bought me some ice cream, but I couldn't get it down. Temp 105.
About 8:00 they loaded me onto a stretcher and took me to the hospital and here I am. I'm in a small room all by myself.
These are the times that try men's souls. I may not be a man but my soul sure is being tired."

"We were supposed to take our first dive today, but went to sick bay this morning. Went in with a temperature of 100.2. Cut fever. Was put in ward E, bed 10. Before lights out I had a temp of 101.2. Wrote to Mom and Sweets.
Submarine Man's Prayer
" Oh Lord, help me to keep my big mouth shut, till I know what I am talking about."
Seems like that could be a prayer for many.

"Went to muster at school today, same time that we go every morning. Came back to Barracks and wrote some to Sweet. Went to bed at 8:30 and got up just in time for chow. Came back and wrote more to Betty. Had show duty and again this evening. Wrote between duties. After the last show duty went to the show with Stone and Jay. Saw, "A Guy Named Joe," with Spenser Tracy. It was a wonderful picture. He said all I feel. Maybe I'm nuts. Or maybe it's love. I sure have to get ahold of myself and get out of this mood. God will help me.
My lungs hurt at the base. I hope nothing becomes of it.
I wrote in Betty's letter tonight, my thoughts of my love for her. Of course I can never exactly say. I doubt if anyone could. I hope she takes it all in the right way. I know she will. I love her with all my heart."
It is obvious that my Dad is love sick, but something else is working on him too.

"Got a letter from Mother and Sweets today. I had the show waiting line duty. Good deal.
I wrote to Mother and then Betty. I love them both so much.
I sure have felt low this last week. I hope I can get over it someday. I love Betty and life so much it just makes me think too much. I am so different in my thinking than most of the guys. I'm wondering sometimes which is right. But I will never change because I know I am right.
Had our first test today."
Dad was one of a kind. He was in love and loyal. He stayed devoted to his mother into adult life. He did not smoke or drink or mess around with other women. I think I got most of my morals from him.

"Went to school this morning. We went aboard an "O"boat this morning. They sure are cramped up. The men in the last war sure had it tough. We also saw a British sub. Pretty junky looking, ours' are sure superior.
No dinner again today, darn it. Went to the show with Jay and saw, "Calling Doctor Death." Came back and finished answering the two letters I got from Betty. Went to mail it and stopped into night school. Stayed until 11:30. Hit the sack at 12:00."

Had turkey for dinner.
I got two letters from Mother this afternoon and 4 from Betty. They were held up here I guess, because of my changing to school.
Started to chow this evening but didn't get there. Met Jay and Stone and we went too the early show and saw Kay Kyger in "Swing Fever."
Came back to the barracks and wrote a short letter to Sweet. She had trouble with a guy last week in school, she wrote. Why can't guys leave good girls alone? Sometimes I hate everybody.
It's a nice night out tonight. I would like to be out walking with Betty now. It's misty. Hit sack at 9:45 on the dot."

Went to school all afternoon, and started to take up O'-boats. We have mail call the last fifteen minutes school in the afternoon. I didn't get any today due to morning again. I sure miss it. I feel a little lost without mail.
Moved to 146 after school. I'm sure sick of moving. Had a watch but chief said I wasn't needed. Still lucky. Wrote to Mother and Sweet this evening. Hit the sack at 9:30, at last in bed on time again.

Went with Jay and Stone to and early show and saw, "Song of Russia," with Robert Tapon. It was a wonderful picture.
I have felt pretty low all day today. I sure hope I never feel like this again. I miss Betty so much it hurts.
After the show I finished writing Betty's letter. I got the idea to call Sweet up, and rushed around getting change. Went to 3 different places to call. I finally found and empty booth. Mrs. Dugan wasn't home. I was really disappointed. Came back and finished that letter and went to bed. I hope I feel better tomorrow. I shouldn't let it get the best of me."
I do not know who Mrs. Dugan is and why dad called her. Maybe the Cuppys did not have a phone and this was a neighbor that would get Betty, my mom.

"Took the diving tank test today, Two 12, Two 18, Two 50. I passed OK. The water was real warm, but we had to walk on ice barefoot to get to the elevator. It sure is queer feel that water creep up to your chin, in such a little space, and such great pressure in a little lock is that. The munsan lung was is easy to breath with. It's all some experience.
I got my pea coat back tonight, it sure is nice, just like new.
Wrote to mom and Betty this evening and then went to the show. With Jay and Stan and saw, "The Lodger." It wasn't to good, but it wasn't too bad. Got to bed about 10:30."
I have trouble, at times, making out some of Dad's words, especially with terms I am not familiar with. The word 'Two' in the first line bothers me and spell check does not like munsan lung.
When my dad talked about walking on ice to get to the elevator, I am reminded that it is winter. The diving tank must had been outside.

"I went to the pressure chamber today and passed OK. After that we had a strength and swimming tests. I am classed as a first class swimmer, now as far the navy is concerned.
Saw a French Sub this afternoon. At the P.X. we saw some French P.O.s and a chief. Their uniforms sure looked strange next to ours. I sure have no kick coming. Those guys have no girl, no parents, no home, no country. All they have is the lust for revenge , and their gloomy sub and its crew, but they all seemed happy.
I wrote to Betty and Mom this evening. I got a letter from Sweet today too. Time to hit the sack."
France did not do well during the war. The were occupied by Germany. My dad felt the country that they knew was gone.

"Took my pea coat to the cleaners. At least it will be cleaned. Took all morning to get paid. I drew $60.00 dollars this time. Brought $2 dollars of airmail stamps while waiting for pay. Also got a hair cut.
I got a letter from Dad and Mother, and two of Betty's letters from the Great Lakes, Written in December. She was talking how she wished I could get home on delayed letters. It hard to believe that is all gone and over with. Also got two other letters from her, the regular ones.
Went back to the examiner. He OKed me, so I guess I'm in.
Wrote to Mother and sent her $5. Wrote to Sweet, and went to the show again. Saw Betty Hutton and Eddie Brackin in "The Miracle of Morgan Creek." It was good, and showed what a mess women can get themselves into today."
My father has been through boot camp at this time. I know this training is more specialized. I find it interesting how he maintains. He does not go out to the bars and has a my mother that he is very loyal to. Dad dated Mom through high school and I am sure they had plans for the future. He reads, goes to the movies, and writes letters. It seems he has found one friend so far. My dad must be respected. He is young, but he put in leadership roles. He is determined to do his best. This is the father I know. He is kind, thoughtful, intelligent and honest. I find it interesting that he sends money to his mother. This is the Father I knew

"We had duties again, but I did not have any watches to stand.
Started writing to Betty at 0800 and stopped at 1730. I wrote 13 pages.
In the afternoon I went to the show and saw, Madam Curie, with Grear Garson and Walt Pigieon. It was about Madam Curie's discovery of radium. I thought it was a wonderful picture. I expressed the way I feel about things, life, Betty, and the way to see life. Everyone laughed at it but I thought it was wonderful.
In the evening Jay wanted me to go with him, so I went to see it again. It was still good. I'm glad that I am different than most of these guys."
Dad did not seem to worry about being different and was just himself. I think I got that trait from him.

"Went to rifle range this morning and shot 10 rounds.
This evening I washed cloths and took and shower, shaved, and cleaned up. All dressed up and no place to go.
Our section had duty, this weekend, but I don't have any watches. Lucky. I met a guy tonight I never expected to see. Jay Buchtel. Boy this is a small world. He did not know me, but I remembered him right away.
I wrote to Mom this morning and send her $2.00. I wrote Sweet this evening, but got started so darned late, I didn't get to answer any of her letters. She will think I'm terrible. But I hope not."
My Grandfather was a foster child on the Buchtel farm. I knew Anna, their daughter. I do not know how Jay Buchtel is related.

"The usual things happened today, details and such.
I got 5 letters from Sweets today, and that's really something. It's the first mail I've received since I have been back. I sure made me feel happy. They were all so sweet. Betty is the most wonderful girl in the world. And I am the luckiest guy in the world.
I ate twice for supper tonight. I will be fat as a pig if I am not careful. I sure got my appetite back fast.
Wrote to Sweet and then I went to a show at 2030. The picture was "Cry Havoc" It was good, I was about nurses and Patton. I pray to God that I may have my chance, whether it takes all of me or not. We are first."
I am not sure what my dad is referring to I the last two sentences.

"Went on two details today. Had T-bone stead for dinner and creamed turkey for supper, some chow. Wrote a letter to Betty this evening, and one to Mom this morning. My cold is still clicking, and I'm hoarse as a fog horn.
Hit the sack at 9:15, early for once.

"Didn't do much today. Went on working details cleaning up barracks morning and afternoon. Just supervised again.
Went to sick bay this morning and I also got another slip from Lt. to him Monday 17th. I hope my cold will be gone by then. He is a swell old fella, said he is getting to know me. When I told him my rank, he said that anyone making TM 3/c at my age ought to make a good submarine man. I hope he is right. Got my blues from cleaners and sewed another crow on undress. did a good job this time.
Wrote a letter to Sweet and then then went to the show with Stone and saw, "What a Woman" with Rosland Russel. It's 11:30 now I can't seem to sleep. The moon is shining in on my face. I seems to get me. I wish the moon wouldn't shine again until the war is over. Silly, but maybe I will be a man some day and will be able to such stuff if God stays with me."
The moon bothered my dad. Did it make him homesick or think of Betty. It is funny, but I used to look at the moon when I did not know where my son was and took comfort that he may be looking at the same moon.

"I woke up this morning with a cold in the head.
A bunch of us went and had our physical this morning. I passed everything on top. The doctor wanted to know where I was from, and said that my teeth was in good shape. He was glad to see a set of clean teeth again.
This afternoon we took a bunch of written tests, and a psychology interview.
The Lt. could not assign me to the pressure chamber till I got over this cold. He sent me to sick bay and I have to go back tomorrow.
Went to small stores and got 3 more craws, and sewed one on my undress jumper.
Wrote a letter to sweet and read and then hit the sack."
I am not sure of the word 'craws.'

"We were broken up into diving sections today, and I was made diving leader of section 142. We were then assigned new barracks, 131.
My section was assigned details all morning and afternoon, but I did not have to do much, just walk around and see that my 13 men kept working.
We moved to our new barracks at 1530 and I got everything squared away.
Didn't eat chow today but stayed in the barracks and wrote a letter to Mother and Sweet. Read a magazine until lights out.
My section had the duty today and tonight, but I didn't have to stand. This is too good to be true."
I had missed that Dad was given a leadership position at this stage. He seems happy that he is not doing the physical chores, but he has the responsibility of his group. Knowing my dad, he was even tempered and treats others with respect. I am sure he made a good leader here.

" Went back to bed after chow and slept until 1230.
Did a lot of reading in the afternoon and washed my whale dress jumper, it dried nice soft and clean.
I didn't take liberty today. I just stayed in and worked.
I wrote a letter to Betty in the evening and got cleaned up and shaved. Not much happened today. Everyone was out on liberty."
*********
At this point Dad is not filling pages. He is writing home, and is busy with training. My mother made her first entry under his. I am not going to post these yet. After about 6 months my dad's entries end and then I think she was given the diary, that is when she started her entries.

" Got our Barracks changed to building 83. It is a swell place and we have swell lockers. Had liberty but stayed in and sashed and go cleaned up. And wrote to sweets"
My father did not drink or smoke. He did not leave the base for awhile, which was why I think he had little interest going out. He also had a busy letter routine to keep up with.

"Train got into New York at 1400, at Grand Central Station. We went down 42nd Street to Broadway and Time Square. We went to the Paramount Theater and saw a Tommy Dorsy and Gene Kinpa picture. Was riding high. The Theater was Beautiful. I saw the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building. New York is swell.
Our train left for New London at 6:00 P.M., and got here at 8:45, caught a bus for the base. We got here at 10:00 and went straight to the OD shack and got straight on our papers.
We were put in Spritzes Navy, pretty tough I guess. Gave us one blanket to sleep with. Didn't sleep much, was thinking too much about Sweets and Home, just so I can keep my chin above water, I'll win this Damn war.
Il say we started the New Year right, we kissed each other."
My dad told me that there were men that became so homesick that the could eat and get out of bed. Those soldiers were released and sent home. I had to have been such a culture shock for many a young man, and you were certainly soon to be off fighting a war. It very idea had to be very sobering.

"Today got up at 0800 and ate breakfast, then went back to bed and slept till 1100.
Went to the ration board in the afternoon and got food and meat stamps, and 5 gal. of gasoline.
Went over and got Betty. Then we both went to the school and got Phyllis and took her to the dentist.
Came home and packed my clothes. Ha Ha helped me and she did too
We ate supper and then left for the station, and stopped by and said goodbye to Margorie.
Said goodbye to Mom and Betty and little Ha Ha
Dad went up to the train with me and wished me lots of luck. He is one swell dad. The train pulled out at 1810. Its going to be hard getting used to this."
Well this was his departure. Phyllis is Dad's little sister. I have no idea who Ha Ha is, maybe a dog?
Margorie was Dad's cousin. Later in life he found out That Margie was his half sister.

" Got up at 0800. Dad and I went to the ration board to get my food stamps and gasoline stamps, but they were closed. We came back and got mother, and went downtown.
Dad and I went to the Station and found out about my train. I leave tomorrow at 1800. Then we went to dinner and the took Betty's watch to get the clasp fixed.
Went over to school and got Betty then drove her home. We came to our house and waited awhile and then went to get some ice cream for supper.
I took Betty home at 2200, and we rode around first, around the boulevards. We went to her house and didn't leave till 0100. She is going to be so tired. It took about 1/2 hour to say goodbye, but at last I did it, I sure hated to do it. She is sweet."
I have to admit, I got chills when I read that my father had checked on his train tickets and wrote that he was to leave tomorrow. It is hard to imagine what it was like to have lived during that time and be young people playing a key roles.

Got up at 8:00 & got ready to go over to school.
Arrived at school in time to eat lunch with Betty the 4th period. Sat & talked to Paul Nieman during 7th. I walked between classes with Stinky, and waited till 9th to bring Betty home. I saw Shorty and a lot of the teachers. Talked to Shorty a long time, he told me how swell Betty was, &am how much he liked her. He gave a little advise and stuff. For he was in the last war. He is a swell guy.
Took Betty home & stopped at the Drug Store again.
Came home and went to Betty's at 1900. We tried to get the car and go ice skating, but Dad didn't get home soon enough. So we made fudge and just stayed home. Betty thought she was catching cold when I left. Got in at 0200.

My day was obviously in love. Dad was dreaming of Mom taking his name. I am not sure they are engaged at this time. Mom was still in high school.
"Got up at 7:30 a.m., and ate breakfast with Dad. Went back to bed at 8:00 & slept till 1300. Was going downtown but slept too late.
Got dressed and went to school to meet Betty. We walked home from school & had a chocolate Soda on the way. We got home and untrimmed the Christmas Tree.
We ate a nice supper and then went down to the Indian & saw "Destination Toko" All about a sub going to Toko!! harbor, it was a swell picture.
Came back to Betty's house & had cake and milk.
Left at 12:00 so she could get a little sleep. She is sweet."

"Today is Sunday & I got up at 11:45a.m. Went after Betty at 12:30. We both came back to the house and had a swell dinner. Mother can sure cook for a king.
Doodie and Vera where here for dinner, but had to leave to see Uncle Homer. about 3:00.
Mother fixed my jumper this afternoon, tightening and shortening it. It fits now.
We all sat around listening to the radio and talking, all afternoon. Ate supper and Betty and I did the dishes. We all played cards the rest of the evening, laughing and joking. I believe I had laughed more this evening than I had for a long time. They made me forget everything, war and all. Dad came home and we stopped and talked till he ate his supper.
I took Betty home at 10:00. Got home at 11:30. She is sweet."
Charlie, Doodie and Vera are cousins of Dad. Charlie played the clarinet in a band. When I was in 5th grade my dad suggested that I learned to play the clarinet. Which I did until high school. I then quit the band to take art.
Noel Bell, my grandfather was a train engineer. He was gone for days at a time driving freight trains all over the country.
