April 10,1944

Monday

"I got a hair cut this morning and this afternoon we had exercises.
I got two letters from Sweet and one from Mom.
After the show, Gaudette and I went to the show and saw Martha Ray and Kay Farmers, and Lana
Turner and misty Mayfield in, "Four Jills in a Jeep."  It was good.
I wrote to Sweet and then washed clothes.
In her letter she told all about what she was going to make me for dinner.  Swiss steak.  I love you Sweets.

Sunday

Happy Easter

"Kirkwood came in drunk last night again and we had a heck of a time getting him to bed.  He will never be a man, although he thinks he is one now.
Mustered at 7:40 this morning.  Wash my knit hat gloves, sweater and scarf. I won't need them too soon again.  I hope.  Cleaned up my locker.  White hats came in today.
After chow, Gaudette and I played basketball.  Then I took a shower and shaved, and mustered at 3:45.  After chow I wrote to Mom and then to Sweet.  I hope I can get home someday again.  I will but it looks like a long time.  Time has passed pretty fast so far.  I hope it keeps it up."

April 8, 1944

Saturday

     "We started electric fish today.
I got a letter from Mom and two from Betty, and also a box of candy, from Mom, with an Easter card in it.
We had to work after school today waxing decks, since we had duty this weekend.  We got finished at 6:30.  I washed a mess of clothes and took a shower.  By the time I got to writing Sweet, it was 9:00, so I didn't send it.  I'll write on it tomorrow.
Hit the sack and the moon was out again.  It was awful foggy out tonight.

Friday

"We had our week's test today, 100%.
Had locker inspection this afternoon.  The chief saw Betty's picture and just stood there and looked.  Then he just said, "She is really a pretty girl.  Son, you are a very lucky man."  Marked down 4.0 without even inspecting it.  The rest of the guys was standing around and of course they had to see too.  They all said that she was sweet and beautiful.  I was so darned proud.  She is swell and the prettiest girl I've ever seen.  I love you Sweetheart.
Gaudette and I went to the early show and saw, "Meet the People," with Dick Powel, Lucille Ball, frozen Puss, and Van Monroe and his orchestra.  It was swell.  I got a letter from Betty today and an Easter card, it was sweet, and here I couldn't even send her one.  I wrote to sweet and then hit the sack.
     With all my love.

April 6, 1944

Thursday

"Got a letter from mom today, but none from Betty.
I wrote to Mom and then to Betty after supper, and then I washed some clothes.  I went to bed pretty early and started reading Richard Haliberton's "Royal Road to Romance."
The moon is shining right in my window in my face.  It still shines as always."

Wednesday

"I got Betty's pictures today.  It's really something.  It looks as if she could talk.  Just what I wanted, and it was sweet of her to have it taken for me.
Went to canteen and got Phyllis and Dad a birthday card.  They don't have any Easter cards, so it looks like I can not send one to Mom and Betty.  Darn it.  And Kinsey said he could not find any in town.
I wrote to Mom and Betty and went to bed at 8:30.  Got a letter from Betty today.  The picture is swell and everybody thinks that she is pretty.  I'm proud of you and your picture Sweet."

Tuesday

"That sleep is what I needed.  I guess anyway.  I feel like a million this morning, and it is a nice morning out.  The robins woke me up.  The war sure has not changed them a bit. I thought I was home for a minute. They used to sing out in Grandma's tree, and wake me up, sure as the day would come.
I feel O.K. today thank goodness. In school we signed up for duty request and I took Electric Torpedo School.  I can't make my mind sorry or sad.  I am doing what is best and not what I want.
We had exercises today and more running.
I got a letter from Mom and Sweet today.
Gaudette and I went to chow and then to the show and saw, "Lady Let's Dance," with Beleta.
Wrote to Sweet, washed and hit the sack.  Got paid $40 today."

I moved from Indianapolis to New York in the 70's.  Indianapolis is on the western edge of the EST zone,  The east coast is on the eastern edge.  Indianapolis never observed daylight savings time.  It was not needed.  On the east coast the sun time was an hour earlier and I remember daylight with the birds sing was as early as 4:30 a.m. in the spring before daylight savings time.

Monday

"We started in on submerged tubes today.  I don't know what was wrong with me but I  was so nervous and shaky.  I almost thought I was nuts for awhile.  Everything seemed to go wrong.  I never have felt this way before.  Just an off day I guess.
We had duty today and still not air raid.  I got a letter from Mom and 2 and 1/4 from Sweet.  One was an April fools joke, with a black sheet of paper.  The sweet little devil.  I wrote to Mom and Sweet and hit the sack early.  I couldn't get to sleep before lights out, too much noise."

Submerged tubes sounds serious to me.  I wonder it Dad was in the classroom or on a submarine.

April 2, 1944

Sunday

"Stan and I went breakfast and then I washed clothes.
I weighed myself after chow and I am up to 156.
It started out to be a nice day, but it rained most of it.
I wrote to Sweet almost all afternoon.  Stan and I went to the early show and saw, "The Return of the Vampire," and  "Hello Good Looking."  It was O.K.
I finished writing to Sweet and hit the sack.  I almost did a foolish thing today, but I am learning I guess."

Well that is a mystery.  What did dad almost do?

April 1, 1944

Saturday

     "April Fool
We had tests this afternoon, then a locker inspection, for our dress shoes and blues.
Went to the show and saw, "The Imposter."  It was about the free French.  They are some guys.  At least I still have what I am fighting for.
Wrote to Mom and Sweet, and hit the sack early for once."

Memo

Easter card from Sweet, April 9, 1944

Easter greetings between the two of us.

"There is no one I can talk to, quite the way I talk to you.  There is no one whom I would rather take my plans and troubles too.  No one is so fine and understanding in every way.  No one to whom I am sending more warm wishes to on Easter Day.

With all my love, forever,
Betty"

Friday

"The chief gave us a talk all day about his patrols.
After supper, Gaudette and I went swimming in the pool for 20 minutes.  I sure have not done much swimming lately.
We went to see Captain Glenn Miller at 5:30 in the gym.  He broadcasted at the theater first.  He sure was good and plenty solid.  He played until 9:30, then the sub base band played for the dance.  Gaudette wanted to stay, so I finally dragged him away at 12:00.  It just made me miss Sweet all the more.  That's the last time I go to anything like that until I can get home.  I miss you Sweetheart."
