January 10, 1944

Wednesday

"We were broken up into diving sections today, and I was made diving leader of section 142.  We were then assigned new barracks, 131.
My section was assigned details all morning and afternoon, but I did not have to do much, just walk around and see that my 13 men kept working.
We moved to our new barracks at 1530 and I got everything squared away.
Didn't eat chow today but stayed in the barracks and wrote a letter to Mother and Sweet.  Read a magazine until lights out.
My section had the duty today and tonight, but I didn't have to stand.  This is too good to be true."

I had missed that Dad was given a leadership position at this stage.  He seems happy that he is not doing the physical chores, but he has the responsibility of his group.  Knowing my dad, he was even tempered and treats others with respect.  I am sure he made a good leader here.
